Whether they started from scratch for this new version is unclear, but one has to imagine the core of The Last of Us Part 2 is the foundation of the mode. The Last of Us Part II was intended to have a multiplayer mode, but the team stopped working on it seemingly around 2019. Fans are still eagerly awaiting more info on the Last of Us multiplayer spin-off, whether or not Naughty Dog will release it in 2022 or have some sort of playable beta or alpha remains to be seen, but it seems like it's coming sooner rather than later.
